The FEMEN movement in recent years has become widely and scandalously known not only in Ukraine, but throughout the world. The girls, who started several years ago as another protest group, constantly expanded the subject and geography of their “protests”. At the same time, the main form of “protest” (the maximum exposure of the participants in public places) causes such an increased interest in the media and receives such a resonance in society that even the recognized master of such public outrageous D. Korchinsky in one of his interviews said: “To compete with them in this sphere is possible only through homosexual aesthetics, if some young people will undress not from above, but from below.”
Their latest antics, connected with sawing down a bow cross allegedly in support of “Pussy Riot” near the main square of the country and an attempt to overshadow the stay of Patriarch Kirill in Ukraine, attracted the attention of Russian observers to them as well. However, the destruction of the cross resulted in the “flight” of one of the main members of this group to France, although, apparently, the “flight” is imaginary.
Despite the attention of the press to their antics, which now have a very wide geography, the inner workings of this group, as well as the sources of funding, remain a carefully guarded secret, which the girls are in no hurry to share. The traditional question usually asked in this context is "Where does the money come from?"
And a lot of money is really spent on the representatives of “FEMEN” who stand up (in the literal sense of the word) for anything.
Since then, a lot of various assumptions have been made about the sources of funding. The project was called the SBU’s “pen test” (because the girls never seriously answered for their “protests”), “Rabinovich’s girls” (with links to various blog entries) (1) and even as a project of some Ukrainian oligarchs. However, despite all these interesting versions, they did not give an answer to the main question - “why”? After all, if someone gives money, then there must be a reason why they give it.
But just this is not clear. It is difficult to identify clear goals pursued by girls - their actions are too diverse and it is impossible to identify a certain system in them. In addition, the reaction of the West is obscure in their European actions.
From their very first shares, FEMEN began to consistently appear in Euronews reports.
Despite the arrests by the police of a number of European states during their actions, no one has put them on the “black list”, which is well known to all those who often travel to the EU countries. Even if you are detained by the police once, you may be denied a Schengen visa in the future. Girls, on the other hand, move around Europe without any problems, as if the laws were not written for them.
A recent investigation by the 1+1 TV channel, when a journalist infiltrated the structure of the organization and received a number of interesting materials about the life of the movement, gives reason for reflection and, possibly, revealing the real reasons for their activities. (2)
Firstly, it turned out that the girls do not experience a lack of money. They receive a salary of at least $1,000 a month, maintain two offices (in Kiev and Paris) and additionally have everything necessary to carry out their actions (expenses for flights, meals, costumes, etc.), and this translates into also in a tidy sum.
Secondly, the names of those people whose capital is most likely really involved in this project became known - Jed Sanden, Helmut Gaer and Beat Schober. Helmut Gaer is a fairly well-known outrageous German DJ who directly admits that he financially supports FEMEN. In addition, he is an active participant in various gay projects in Germany.
Ms. Schober is the least understood member of this list: a German citizen, the owner of a company that helps those who wish to move from Germany to Kyiv to live. At the same time, she has close ties with the European Business Association (by the way, the recent EU envoy to Ukraine, Mr. Teixeira, is an honorary member of this association), which in turn has extensive contacts with various large corporations, including German ones. In some sources, she is called responsible for maintaining the foreign language version of the FEMEN website, but it is highly doubtful that this respectable lady would bother herself with such work.
The most interesting character from this trinity is Jed Sanden. Perhaps this is the only American who has been declared persona non grata since Ukraine's independence. This event happened in 2000, when he was detained at the Boryspil airport on the recommendation of the SBU. As reported by The Financial Times, thanks to the diplomatic intervention of the US State Department, the incident was quickly resolved. Many observers cite Mr. Sanden as an example of a person who, having started with $8,000 in 1995, was able to build one of the most powerful media holdings in Ukraine, KR-Media, and become a millionaire (according to various estimates, his fortune is estimated at between 16 and 20 million dollars).
True, for some reason, no one has a question: how did a 25-year-old guy, without connections, who by that time had just graduated from Macalester College, managed in the difficult situation of the criminal revelry of the 90s, when “problematic” issues in Ukraine were resolved with an accurate shot , build your media holding? Another fact is also interesting - despite the publicity of this figure, it is impossible to find any detailed biography of him on the Internet, which is very unusual in modern times ...
So what interests can these dissimilar people have in Ukraine? Especially of a political nature, since all the antics of "FEMEN" are in this plane. Theoretically, Sanden could have had those, but he officially sold his business to P. Poroshenko and now he has no obvious business interest in our country.
Even less in some "affairs" in the vastness of Ukraine, one can suspect the "star" of German clubs H. Gaer or the respectable B. Schober.
But if we assume that the key interest of this project lies not in Ukraine, but in Europe, then many things can become clearer.
And there are reasons for such assumptions.

If you take a sober look at the chronology of the FEMENE protests, it will become noticeable that, starting with slogans about sexual violence and slavery, the girls began to rapidly move into the field of religion and culture. And not just religion, but anti-Islamic actions, each of which is on the verge of a foul. For example, an action in Istanbul near the country's main mosque. Or an action in London against Sharia. Or an action timed to coincide with the opening of an office in Paris, right under the Islamic Cultural Center (by the way, the 1 + 1 journalist was then very scared for her safety). Against this background, actions against the Orthodox and Catholic churches look more like a distraction, which is designed to demonstrate the "objectivity" of the girls.
We would venture to suggest that the entire project from beginning to end was focused on entering the European arena, and Ukraine was simply, to put it mildly, an affordable platform for starting, which, moreover, allowed the interested EU bodies to distance themselves from the movement.
It is possible that the main goal of the movement is to provoke Muslims in Europe (and not only) to aggressive actions in response to insulting their religious and national feelings.
Not so long ago, many European top politicians made very frank statements about the "failure of the policy of multiculturalism in Europe", and therefore about the ineffectiveness of the current policy towards other cultural groups. Even with the naked eye, it is noticeable how rapidly the Islamization of Europe is taking place. It is clear that the EU understands the need for a radical change in policy towards Muslims, but how can this be done after the policy of “political correctness” cultivated for decades?
The most obvious strategy is the technique of holding high-profile actions, which, on the one hand, would draw attention to this problem in a sharp form, and on the other hand, provoke Muslims to a visually noticeable reaction (for example, as in the case of a recent anti-Islamic film), which could cause a drastic change in official EU policy towards them.
The first part of the plan was carried out by Breivik, who is now serving his sentence in royal conditions and more like a hero than a criminal. By the way, the European press does not forget to maintain interest in his case and motives for committing a crime. But the second component will be implemented by such movements as "FEMEN", which are increasingly moving to Europe.
This assumption to a certain extent explains both the real goals of the FEMEN movement and the attention paid to it by the European press, the free entry of participants into the EU, the mild reaction of the police during the actions of the movement participants.
However, it is possible that the activities of "FEMEN" in Ukraine was sponsored and promoted not only by the West. Judging by some of the actions of the topless movement, some Ukrainian politicians also hired them for their political purposes.

On August 9, 2010, the FEMEN women's movement held a topless rally under the walls of the SBU building in response to the actions of the Security Service of Ukraine regarding the investigation of facts of pressure on FEMEN activists.
An activist of the women's movement FEMEN went to the building of the SBU topless and with a hammer in her hand. On the new FEMEN breasts, it’s short and clear: “We killed!”, - in response to a long and confusing statement from SBU officials. Thus, the women's movement FEMEN expresses its indignation at the formal approach of the SBU officers to the investigation of the facts of pressure on FEMEN activists and declares its results an absolute fiction.
The leader of the women's movement FEMEN, Anna Hutsol, received an official response from the Security Service of Ukraine regarding FEMEN's demands to deal with the facts of pressure on the movement's activists by persons introducing themselves as the SBU.
The official letter from the SBU states:
“The conducted inspection established that the Security Service did not take any measures against the leader and activists of the FEMEN movement. Corresponding instructions on this occasion from other law enforcement and state bodies were not issued to the Security Service of Ukraine.
At the same time, the employees of the Security Service of Ukraine did not conduct preventive conversations with the activists of the women's movement "FEMEN" in higher educational institutions, since the activities of the latter are regulated by the current legislation of our state and internal statutes and do not involve the intervention of state, law enforcement and special bodies without the existence of the necessary legal grounds for this.
FEMEN believes that if the SBU officers did not take part in illegal actions, then it is a matter of honor for the special services to reveal the scoundrels hiding behind fake IDs. We would like to note that the activists of the women's movement FEMEN have repeatedly offered their assistance in identifying the persons involved in these malfeasances, but have not been involved in the proceedings.
“The SBU is either corporate cover-up or Valery Khoroshkovsky's professional impotence. According to our data, similar formal replies were received by all victims of illegal actions by the SBU, who dared to publicize the facts of pressure. The SBU’s signature tactic “I am not me, and the house is not mine” testifies either to mutual responsibility in the ranks of the SBU, or to the presence in the department of a group of employees who are not controlled by the head of the SBU, Valery Khoroshkovsky. In both cases, the question of the adequacy of the Security Service of Ukraine to the duties assigned to it to protect the national security of Ukraine and its citizens remains open,” said Anna Hutsol, leader of the women's movement FEMEN.
The FEMEN women's movement has traditionally called on all truly opposition organizations, parties and movements, as well as ordinary Ukrainians, to resist the illegal actions of law enforcement agencies.
Remember, June 23, 2010. At about 1 a.m., people entered the apartment of FEMEN leader Anna Hutsol by fraudulent means, introduced themselves as law enforcement officers, and forcibly took her out into the street. Then they put her in their car and kept her there for two hours. These people demanded to cancel the action, threatened with physical violence, gave the addresses of FEMEN activists. During the conversation, they changed their requirements several times. As a result, they decided to remove the paragraph from the FEMEN statement about “preventive conversations” between SBU employees and activists and forced them to call the press secretary back in order to make changes to the text of the press release of the action in front of them.
June 25, 2010 FEMEN filed an application with the SBU and the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine with a request to provide protection to their activists. Both instances reported that the decision would be made within a month.
The body of Oksana Shachko, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Femen movement, was found in Paris. An activist of the movement announced the death of the girl on Tuesday, July 23.
According to her, Shachko committed suicide, the exact date of death is still unknown.
The co-founder of the movement also confirmed the information about the death of a colleague and told reporters that the last time friends saw Shachko was in Paris (where she permanently lived) at a party. Soon Shachko left the event, after that she could not be found for three days, she did not get in touch.
Friends came to Shachko's house, knocked out the door in the apartment and found the girl's body. Hutsol also explained that a suicide note was found at the home of the founder of Femen, in which it was written “you are fake” (English: “you are fake, not real”).
Telegram channel Paris Burns suggested that 31-year-old Shachko meant the Parisian bohemia, with whose representatives she had been in close contact lately.
The feminist organization "ONA" on Facebook expressed condolences to Shachko's relatives. According to the organization, the girl has recently hosted several art exhibitions. Over the past few years, she has already tried to commit suicide, representatives of the organization "ONA" say.
“I had a chance to see and communicate with Oksana in Paris. She came to our squat several times. We tried to pull her out for promotions, but the Parisian bohemia swallowed her up.
Oksana had many exhibitions, press attention, rich friends. Over the past 2 years, she tried to commit suicide twice. The third attempt, unfortunately, was successful. Very hard. Ksenia, we love you! We have been close all this time, not fake, real,” the message says.
The death of the Femen activist was commented on by a Russian senator. “One of the founders and activists of Femen committed suicide in Paris, leaving a note, presumably addressed to the Parisian bohemia: “You are all fake.” Disappointed, apparently. What was she doing and what was she looking for? Didn’t it occur to her that Femen themselves were nothing more than a vulgar fake?” wrote the member on his twitter.
Oksana Shachko together with Anna Hutsol founded the Femen movement in April 2008 in Kyiv. According to the activists of the movement, they fight for women's rights and freedom of speech, and also oppose prostitution and sexual harassment. In addition, they hold political rallies and events in defense of same-sex marriage and against paedophilia. At the same time, although Femen and protect the rights of women, they do not consider themselves a feminist organization.
To draw attention to their actions, the activists carry out them topless, often writing slogans and appeals with a black marker on their chests. The official motto of the movement: "I came, undressed, won." At their actions, the girls also wear a flower wreath - a traditional Ukrainian headdress. In total, the organization has about 40 participants, mostly students of Ukrainian universities.
The first actions took place mainly in Kyiv, but since 2012 the movement has shifted its activity to Europe.
After several attacks on members of the movement in 2013, the founders of Femen moved to Paris. Shachko received political asylum in France and has since lived in Paris, painting.
Members of the movement regularly come to the center of public attention due to their actions against the official authorities of many European countries.
So, in March of this year, a half-naked Femen activist held a protest action when the former prime minister and leader of the Forward Italy party voted in the March 4 parliamentary elections.
According to Italian media, a half-naked activist shouting: "Berlusconi, your time is up!" climbed onto the table of the election commission and tried to prevent the politician from voting. Berlusconi smiled in response, but nevertheless fulfilled his civic duty. The girl was detained by the police.
A month before, one of the activists of the Femen movement naked in front of the President of Ukraine during his visit to a ball in Vienna. The girl showed her bare chest with an inscription demanding that the President of Ukraine “get out” of the ball. Femen noted that the purpose of the action was to inform the public about the inadmissibility of the presence of the "embezzler Poroshenko" at the event.
Later, Russian Ambassador to Austria Dmitry Lyubinsky was accused of participating in the action. “For organizing and participating in Femen anti-Ukrainian actions in Austria,” the Ukrainian site “Peacemaker” entered his data into its database.
In recent months, the organization of Ukrainian topless activists Femen opened branches in Paris and Berlin, celebrated the departure of the Pope with an invasion of Notre Dame, earned a fatwa on its head (the Tunisian member of the group is threatened with death by Islamists) and, finally, frightened Angela Merkel and pleased Vladimir Putin in a peculiar way. The last thing you expect from self-proclaimed "sektremists" is a comfortable office in the center of Kyiv, a block from the Hyatt. Inside - a mixture of a startup with a fight club: simulators, computers, posters. The ceiling is painted with social media logos. Girls in matching black T-shirts roam the office; one of them, wearing boxing gloves, greets me with a playful jab ("That's our feminist hello," she says). You started in Ukraine, but expanded your activities around the world.
In most branches, our girls from Kyiv are still in Paris - Oksana, she has now returned to renew her visa. In Berlin - Sasha Shevchenko. Our missionaries go to places where there are women who want to be Femen and teach them how to properly protest and so on. Brazil is a specific region. Sarah Winter appeared there on her own, for a year and a half she has been implementing the ideas of Femen, we have conflicts with her from time to time, because she has her own specifics of activity. But here we have, in Kyiv, a real headquarters, from which we are trying to supervise all our departments. Wherever an action is held, it is invented and advertised from here - post-release, photos on the site, Facebook.

So it is - many journalists do not take photographers to our actions, because they know that both photos, and video, and post-release - they will all accurately receive directly from Femen. We are the fastest news agency. The main feature that we have implemented is the media structure of the structure. Before us, it never occurred to anyone to combine media technologies and feminism. And we realized that the main thing now is to become attractive to the media, no matter how it sounds.
Sometimes you get the impression that you are protesting against everything at once - the patriarchy, the Pope of Rome, the Brazilian carnival, Putin, the Russian Orthodox Church ...
The essence is the same - male rule. The dictator is a macho of machos, he fucks not only a woman, but the whole country. A prime example of patriarchy. In Russia, it is the most concentrated, because the patriarch of the church is also connected there. Russia in general as a guide for young feminists.
At the same time, you started with actions against Ukrainian sex tourism.
When Tymoshenko was prime minister, we approached her about prostitution and sex tourism. Naive, we thought that since she was a woman, she should save her compatriots. But we were wrong. The first high-profile episode that the whole world started talking about was the “Ukraine is not a brothel” action, which later turned into a protracted war. Girls dressed as prostitutes lined up along Khreshchatyk. Then, in 2008, it was still considered extremely shocking. We just realized that the wedge in the minds of society needs to be knocked out only with a wedge. Prostitutes against prostitution! This tore the brain of the Ukrainian layman - how is it, bees against honey? Only such contradictions make people think. Everyone knew that there was a problem, but no one wanted to discuss it. And we brought this topic to the government. It, of course, did nothing about this, but at least they started talking about it there.
That is, you consider a job done when it reaches the state level, and then you throw it away?
We do not quit, but our main mission is to raise the problem, to bring it to the public discussion, and what will happen next is the concern of society.
Why Ukraine has become the world center of sex tourism?
There are many poor and, moreover, beautiful women. They understand that they deserve more, but there are very few ways to achieve the desired standard of living. In addition, the attitude towards women here is primitively patriarchal. You are born a girl, they immediately put a doll in you, they announce that you are a future mother, therefore, by all means, you must find a husband for yourself, and you cannot have another fate. So young girls are looking for suitors, moreover, the most progressive ones are among foreigners. This admiration for Europe and America has been going on since Soviet times. In addition, they have already seen enough of their own; maybe even the visitor will not drink.
And how do you explain this hyperfeminine image of a Ukrainian woman? Not in all poor countries it is so pronounced.
Well, why, and Africans and Brazilians adorn themselves in the same way. In Cyprus, they love to dress up, but they say the Russians taught them this. Be that as it may, all this is a demonstration of charms in search of a man who can save from poverty.
And instead of fighting with the demonstration of charms, you decided to bring it to the point of absurdity?
We decided to make it our weapon. The extreme use of sex is our feminine sexism that we oppose to the masculine. Protesting topless, we manifest ourselves precisely as women, sharply isolate ourselves from male society. In the past, feminists had to be like men in order to gain basic human rights. Now women need to stand out, because equality is in difference.
In some countries, feminists are not fighting for tougher laws against prostitution, but, on the contrary, for the rights of prostitutes.
What rights can a slave have? Do you understand that this is human trafficking? What rights does a person who does not even belong to himself have? What is the difference between legal and illegal? The pimp just changed, now it's the state.

Tell us how each of you got into Femen.
For me, there is no such thing that on April 10, 2008, we gathered with the girls at home in pajamas and decided, let's bang Femen. For me, it all started much earlier. I spent my childhood in Russia, grew up in the countryside. She knew how to do everything, but not to milk a cow, and this was considered a big disadvantage, my grandmother said that no one would marry me. When I said that I would find a husband without a cow, she was surprised: why do you need such a husband? I was already struck by the amazing system of life in the countryside. Women physically work a lot, they have children, the whole house, and for some reason the main one is an uncle who does nothing. I thought about it a lot and decided to become a feminist.
We met Sasha Shevchenko in 2008. The first action in which I participated was against a pseudo-writer, the author of the book "Return the woman to the harem." They came to the presentation of this book, threw a cake at him. And he, it turned out, was walking around with a spray can, grabbed it, and we all almost suffocated from tear gas.
I participated in promotions from time to time, but finally joined Femen, I realized that it was actually me, just a year ago. Now I can't live without it. Now I am not just participating, but already trying to generate these processes. If not me, then who?
We have known Anya and Ksenia since childhood, when we lived in Khmelnitsk. They called themselves the Khmelnytsky gang.
Did you already have something like an organization in Khmelnytsky?
Yes, it was called "New Ethics". Both girls and boys were there, but I gathered all the girls, and we left the guys. To create a feminist organization, it was necessary to break decisively with men. So we worked for the first six months: all the men are goats, freaks, scoundrels. Small but radical feminism.
You have a great, so to speak, identity. Did you make the logo yourself?
It was presented to us by Artemy Lebedev. Moreover, we didn’t really like the first version that he sent, we said - change it. He did change.
Doesn't it bother you that he is quite a macho man, moreover, with such a slight Kremlin tinge?
So what, at that moment he was useful to us.
And who came up with the name?
From the very beginning, we understood that we needed something short, of five letters, so that it would be more convenient to place it on different logos. At first, there were scandals about the name. Sasha did not like the presence of "men" there. What, they say, is the man in the title doing? They quarreled for a week and still settled on Femen.
How do you fill the time between promotions?
We swing the press, do push-ups and take pictures. Zhenya is always rushing around with a tablet, taking pictures of everyone and posting everything on VKontakte - we are always banned on Facebook, even for caricatures of naked activists. We should start a war with Facebook.
By what means do you exist?

Including Western ones?
Yes. It is not easy for an organization like Femen to work legally in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. In democratic countries, it is possible to introduce a legal status, a legal entity, it is impossible to exist without it, but here it is safer without a legal entity. We were denied registration four times, we tried to register as a public organization. On the other hand, many people advise not to register, because it is impossible to make claims against the Femen movement: legally, such a person does not exist.

How do you explain that the authorities more or less leave you alone?
Now it's not up to us, preparations are underway for the elections. In addition, we are not deploying vigorous activity here: only one protest in the last six months. So far, we have focused on Europe, transferred our main asset there, and we did the right thing - the girls have two or three criminal cases here. But we would not call the authorities' attitude towards us complete calm, especially with the advent of Yanukovych. Under Yushchenko, we protested wherever we wanted, the police protected us. They called and said: hello, today we have a very radical protest, we will be naked, can we have more police? And please - 50 policemen are on duty at the Femen action. As soon as Yanukovych came, they took us to the police station for the first time. When the special services began to visit universities, calling girls through deans, rectors, we realized that something was changing. They were indignant and decided to hold a protest in front of the building of the security service of Ukraine. The SBU reacted immediately, they came to Anya at night, she, seeing the policemen who had previously protected her, opened the door, dragged her out into the street and said: “You are not holding a protest tomorrow.” How? There are already going to 50 people of the press! “This is not even discussed. Young lady, you do not understand where you are and what is happening. Having gathered after that in the morning, we decided to go for broke, to tell the press what happened at night. Counted on the scandal - and did not lose. Since then, we have been in conflict with the Ukrainian authorities, with law enforcement agencies. It made us stronger and stronger. We have become who we are. Sextremism would not have appeared, topless would not have appeared if Yanukovych had not come to power. In this peaceful, cozy community, we would walk around with balloons and flowers. Like in Europe. And as soon as a conflict appeared and we entered into it, we became completely different, we became fighters.
