It is necessary to clarify the classification of ready-made dry food into "premium", "super premium" and "economy class". Although this classification is conditional, it still has certain differences. It can be visualized in the form of the following graph:

So in the "economy class" there will be a high content of offal, or beef will be used as protein, and wheat as cereals. Accordingly, it will be enriched with vegetable protein. “Premium” differs from “superpremium” only in that for the production of “superpremium” feeds, products with a hygienic certificate are used (products that are used for people), respectively, higher-quality products are used for their production: poultry, lamb, rabbit meat; rice and/or corn are used as cereals, and they have specific additives. Accordingly, the digestibility of these feeds is different: for "economy class" - up to 70%, "premium" - 85% and "super premium" - over 90%.

If for ready-made dry food their calorie content is indicated (340-430 kcal / 100 gr.) For boiled food, it must be calculated. There is the so-called Legrand-Defretin formula (1993) for calculating the energy needs of the body, which is based on the principle that one decimeter of the body's body area consumes 100 kcal. Based on this, you can easily calculate the daily energy requirement of a dog for food:

E \u003d 125 W -0.75 \u003d 125 (4 √W) 2, Where

E - energy requirement in kcal / day

W- body weight of the dog

Depending on the physiological state of the body, this need will change, therefore, correction factors are used:

The physiological state of the dog WCPN Recommendations Dog weight
20 kg 30 kg 40 kg
adult, normal E 1817,8 1912,3 1992,3
mature, active up to 2E 3635,5 3824,5 3964,6
Lactation up to 3E 5453,4 5736,8 5946,9
Pregnancy from the 6th week 1.3E 2363,1 2486,0 2577,0
Rearing of young animals 2E 3635,5 3824,5 3964,6
Growing puppies 1.5E 2726,7 2868,4 2973,4
Raising almost adult puppies 1.2E 2181,4 2294,7 2378,7

Now that you know how much energy your dog needs, it remains only to calculate the content of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the food preparation, convert them into kilocalories and compare.

Feed Energy Conversion Rate (According to Atwaler)

1 gr. protein = 4 kcal (16.7 kJ);

1 gr. carbohydrates = 3.75 kcal (15.7 kJ);

1 gr. fat = 9 kcal (37.7 kJ).

For ready-made dry food, it is easier, it is enough to calculate the carbohydrate content in this feed: from 100%, subtract % protein content, subtract % fat content, subtract % moisture and subtract % ash, fiber, minerals - the remainder will be % carbohydrate content. It remains only to calculate the total calorie content in 100 gr. prepared dry food.

In connection with the above, one can ten commandments of proper nutrition.

1. Give your dog plenty of water. There should always be fresh drinking water in the dog bowl. The water needs to be changed frequently. The average water intake is 60 ml per day per 1 kg of animal body weight. Puppies, lactating females, working dogs, and on a hot day, the amount of water consumed exceeds the indicated norm.

2. Move to another food gradually. The transition of the animal from one food to another must be carried out gradually, within one week, so that during this time the dog adapts to the taste of the new food, its digestion and assimilation. During this time, the intestinal microflora, which is more sensitive in a dog than in humans, also has time to rebuild.

3. Feed your dog regularly. The dog is happy if he receives the same food at the same time every day from the same bowl in the same place. The number of meals is determined by the physiological state of the dog and should be reviewed frequently.

4. Control the amount of food consumed. This procedure is carried out by calculating the required amount of daily energy intake by the dog and its specific content in the feed product. The amount of food dispensed must be controlled by weighing it regularly to avoid your dog becoming overweight.

5. Give your dog a balanced diet. Regardless of whether you give homemade or industrial dog food, it must contain all the necessary ingredients in quantities and proportions corresponding to the size of the dog (large, small and medium breeds), its physiological status (maintenance, breeding, sports dog), age (puppy, adult or old dog) and possible pathological condition.

6. Choose your dog food carefully. Choosing food for your dog with one or another main ingredient is not easy. First of all, all the criteria for a balanced diet should be taken into account. There are 3 criteria in choosing a good food product for a dog: age (puppy, adult mature or old dog), level of its physical activity and physiological state (active, sports, breeding) and size (small, medium, large).

7. Rational use of feed. We must always pay attention to what we give our dog. If industrial feed is used, all manufacturer's instructions must be followed. If you are giving homemade food to an animal, forever forget the following phrases: “She eats what I do”; "She eats what she wants"; "She only eats this." And finally, leftovers from the table, sweets, sugar, pies, chocolate are not part of the dog's food product (it is better to give her small cheese crusts).

8. Dog hygiene must meet the appropriate requirements.

Industrial feed guarantees good hygiene and correct application, eliminating the risk of poisoning. Opened canned dog food, fresh and thawed food should be stored in a cool place, and croquettes should be packaged and kept dry. If the dog has not completely eaten his food, then the leftovers should be discarded. The dog's cup should be washed every day.

9. Observe the results of feeding. The effectiveness of the diet and the dog's adaptation to it must be monitored by observing changes in weight, quality of hairline, excrement, appetite and general condition.

10. Feel free to seek the advice of a veterinarian. The experience of a veterinarian allows you to be a good nutritionist. In the event of worsening appetite or severe bulimia, emaciation or overweight, diarrhea or persistent constipation, disturbances in physical condition or general restlessness, as well as general changes manifested in the form of thirst or appetite, which may be precursors of a general illness, require a serious examination of the animal by a veterinarian .

Feeding service dogs in the kennel

A dog by nature is a predator, which tends to feed mainly on meat. However, in the process of domestication, these animals have adapted to the existence near humans so much that they have become almost omnivorous, like their two-legged owners.

A working dog, which expends an enormous amount of energy in the service, needs sufficient and nutritious food.

Reinforced feeding is necessary mainly for producers, breeding bitches, growing puppies and working dogs during periods of intensive use.

Dogs need proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins and water. They can also consume carbohydrates, although it cannot be said for sure that they are necessary for the animal. Most foods contain a mixture of some or all of the essential nutrients, so a combination of different foods will result in a balanced diet. Nutrients in food should be present in varying amounts. If a nutrient is missing or insufficient in the feed, the entire product will not meet the required requirements.

Norms of daily feeding of service dogs of institutions of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia

The need for puppies up to 4 months of age is 2 times less than in adult dogs, but with the mandatory inclusion of milk in the diet.

Methods for transferring dogs from one type of feeding to another

The transition to the use of dry industrial food for feeding service dogs takes place against the background of a normal physiological state and functioning of the gastrointestinal tract of the animal.

The transition period to dry food is 7 days, during which it is carried out gradually, by mixing the new food into the usual diet, reducing the content of the previously used food and increasing the amount of dry food in the mixture to the recommended values, until it completely replaces the old one.

The amount of dry food at the beginning of the transfer should not exceed 10% of the diet, this can be seen from the table.

Percentage of feed

A daily ration of 600 g of food is given to the dog at the rate of 30% of the required amount of food before the upcoming load and 70% during rest.

When using ready-made dry food, the need for drinking water is higher than when eating traditional food. It is necessary to control the presence of a sufficient amount of clean water in the dog's drinker. In winter, especially in captive keeping, in order to reduce energy costs for warming and digesting dry food, it is preferable to pre-soak dry food with warm boiled water +40 0 C at the rate of 1: 3 (1 part of food to 3 parts of water).

When using a complete dry food, additional food (bread, raw meat products and broths) is excluded.

Service dog breeds today are used for sentry, border, search, shepherd and other purposes. The most significant group among all service dogs are shepherd dogs.

For a full-fledged life of a service dog during the performance of specific tasks and work, additional nutrients are required, which are taken into account when calculating daily feed rations in comparison with individuals that do not serve. The increased muscular work of dogs inevitably leads to an acceleration in the consumption of energy, vitamins, proteins, fats and carbohydrates and mineral components in the animal body.

The more strenuous the job, the greater the need for additional nutrients. Not every service dog expends the same amount of energy for the same amount of work. The energy consumption for the work done depends on the level of training of the pet, which eliminates unnecessary movements, on overwork, in which case the vital activity of the dog's body is noticeably reduced, as well as on the individual, personal properties of a particular dog - breed, body structure and development, etc.

While working, service dogs typically increase their energy expenditure by about 35% compared to adults at rest. The required amount of energy for service dogs per kilogram of body weight is given in the description below.

For example, a guard dog with a body weight of 30–45 kg and kept in an unheated building should include: 450 g of meat, 450 g of cereals, 290 g of potatoes and other vegetables, 200 g of flour products, 20 g of animal fat and 15 g of edible salt.

In the case of replacing meat in the diet with offal, their amount is increased evenly in calories. As a rule, when feeding service dogs with various offal, the amount of the latter is doubled compared to the usual norm of meat. Meat is allowed to be exchanged for the same amount of seafood.

It is customary to feed cereals that are simpler and more affordable - oatmeal, wheat, barley. Unhealthy service dogs are presented with rice, buckwheat or semolina. Meat or cereals can sometimes be exchanged for milk and other dairy products. Of the varieties of bread, gray and wheat are preferable. But it is recommended to feed stale bread (dried). As a mandatory animal fat, as a rule, melted lard is included in the daily food ration of service dogs. The most preferred vegetables in a pet's diet are beets, carrots and cabbage. Also, dogs perfectly eat boiled pumpkin, previously freed from peel and seeds. It is allowed to feed tomatoes and eggplants. Cabbage is given both fresh and sauerkraut. In the spring and summer, it is recommended to give dogs young nettles, lettuce, sorrel, all raw and chopped, adding a little to the soup.

The same type of food instantly bores service dogs and, for this reason, significantly slows down the absorption of the necessary nutrients from the daily feed ration. In this regard, the food in the diets needs to be diversified in every possible way. This effect is achieved by changing the types of meat products, cereals and vegetation. In the case of the collective maintenance of service dogs in special kennels or in teams, for the purpose of cooking, separate kitchens are built only for pets.

In field conditions, if cooking food is physically impossible, service dogs are fed with biscuits, canned meat or concentrates (dry food). Instructions for the use of biscuits and concentrates, and in addition their nutritional value, are often indicated in the attached manual descriptions. For several days, for example, along the way, it is allowed to feed service dogs with bread, water, bread with milk, bread with kefir, crackers soaked in water.

In the case of individual maintenance, a significant part of the daily diet of a service dog may well be leftovers from the table of its owner.

Reserve healthy non-working service dogs are fed according to the standards and rations of pets during rest.

Cooking and feeding service dogs

How to make food for service dogs:

  • 1. The meat is washed, chopped on a wooden block into small pieces, everything is thrown into a large cauldron of water and boiled until the meat begins to peel off the bone. After that, it is taken out, crushed and added to the feed in accordance with the norms.
  • 2. Groats are poured into the remaining meat broth and boiled until a liquid porridge is formed. Groats are cleaned and washed before cooking.
  • 3. Before placing vegetables in the boiler, they are washed, cleaned and chopped.
  • 4. Salt is added.
  • 5. Ready food, placed in cups, and arranged to cool. 6. 6. As the food reaches normal eating temperature, it is distributed to the dogs. The food should not be very hot or cold.
  • 7. Dogs should have free access to clean water.
  • 8. To diversify the diet, alternating cereals are used, and once a week they give fresh raw meat on the bone.

Basic zoohygienic requirements and sanitary measures

An important task in the prevention of infectious diseases in dogs is the observance of zoohygienic conditions that correspond to the biological needs of animals. So, for keeping dogs, you should choose dry, quiet, wind-protected places. Aviaries and cages should be bright and spacious. The floors in the cages are made of wood. The general walking area is covered with sand, the top layer of which is renewed annually. Changing the sand cover is one of the effective preventive measures aimed at reducing the content of microorganisms in the environment without the use of chemicals.

In conditions of concentration of animals in a limited area, measures should be taken to prevent the introduction and spread of infection. For this you need:

  • - limit the number of persons having access to the enclosures;
  • - to complete the livestock only from healthy dogs taken out from areas free from infectious diseases;
  • - newly imported dogs should be kept in quarantine in a cage specially designated for this purpose (to prevent contact with other animals), where they are monitored for three weeks;
  • - perform sanitary and anti-epizootic measures: disinfection (disinfection), disinsection (destruction of harmful insects and ticks), deratization (destruction of rodents).

Disinfection

Before disinfection of places where dogs are kept (enclosures, cages), they must be mechanically cleaned. For more effective removal of contaminants, detergents are also used simultaneously with mechanical cleaning (especially when disinfection is carried out in puppy houses).

Disinfectants are either physical or chemical.

Sunlight is a powerful natural physical disinfectant. Violet and ultraviolet rays of the sun bactericidal effect on microbes. Therefore, it is not recommended to plant trees and shrubs on the territory of the enclosures, which would greatly shade the cages, the grass around the enclosures is mowed. Quartz and bactericidal lamps are used in the premises.

A fairly effective means for disinfecting shield flooring, wooden floors, metal gratings and various equipment is fire. A blowtorch, gas flamethrowers can serve as a source of fire. When working with them, special precautions must be observed.

We must not forget about such simple physical means of disinfection as boiling water and hot steam.

Of the chemical disinfectants, the most suitable and affordable are: 2-3% sodium hydroxide solution, 2-3% formalin solution, 20% bleach suspension, 2% chloramine solution, 3% lysol and creolin solutions . Disinfectant solutions are sprayed using special installations or manual sprayers.

Approximately 1 liter of solution is used per 1 m2 of surface. Before use, solutions (except for formalin and bleach) are recommended to be heated to 70-80°C. The treated surfaces are kept for 2.5-3 hours, and then washed with water.

To disinfect shoes at the entrance to the enclosure, disinfection mats made of sawdust or other porous material impregnated with one of the indicated disinfectant solutions are installed.

Disinfection of brooms, rakes, shovels and other equipment is carried out by soaking in the above solutions.
