This was the last feat of Taras Bulba. The enemies caught him, but he did not lose his pride and honor and met his death with dignity. When Taras was burned at the stake, he already felt the approach of imminent death, but at the same time he looked at his Cossacks, fleeing from the Poles, and shouted: “Boys, to the shore!”

The mother of both young Cossacks, the wife of old Bulba, “old,” as he himself calls her, is depicted in the story in passing, with features characteristic of an era when a woman was revered not as a person, but as an inferior being, good for nothing. This is a quiet, driven woman, doomed on the one hand to eternal loneliness in her family, on the other - to the eternal fear of losing her husband and sons in battle, and in peacetime to guess and fulfill all the slightest desires and movements of her power-hungry and stubborn husband. When Taras, who had taken a walk, was inflamed with a warrior spirit and announced that the next morning he was leaving with his sons for the Setch, he began to beat pots and flasks, the poor old woman sat sadly on the bench, not daring to object; looking at her sons, with whom she was about to part so soon, she could not refrain from tears, and no one could describe all the silent strength of her grief, which filled her eyes and convulsively compressed lips.

Even in such a matter as love and affection for children, the "old" did not have the right to show her independence. She was deprived by the harsh conditions and concepts of that age even of that natural right, which wise nature did not deprive even wild animals. Taras interrupts her caresses with a stern exclamation: “Enough, howl, old woman. The Cossack is not to mess with the women. You would hide them both under your skirt and sit on them like chicken eggs. Go, go…” The poor old woman seemed to be all woven out of love for children and obedience to her husband. Nothing else can be seen in it. It was a person without rights, without a voice, completely subordinate to the will of his master - a man.

The only area where a woman seemed to have relative freedom was religion. The “old” could pray for her children as much as she wanted. The moon from the heights of the sky had long been illuminating the whole yard filled with sleeping people, a thick bunch of willows and high weeds, in which the palisade surrounding the yard sank. Already the horses, smelling the dawn, all lay down on the grass and stopped eating; the upper leaves of the willows began to murmur, and little by little the murmuring stream descended down them to the very bottom. She sat up until daylight, was not at all tired, and wished inwardly that the night would last as long as possible. Bulba suddenly woke up and jumped up. He remembered very well everything he ordered yesterday.

The poor old woman, deprived of her last hope, dejectedly trudged into the hut. While she, with tears, was preparing everything that was needed for breakfast, Bulba was giving out his orders, fiddling around in the stable, and himself choosing the best decorations for his children.
