Nettle for health and beauty: how useful is a burning plant. Nettle - useful properties and contraindications Nettle plant useful properties and uses

With the onset of summer and the appearance of various herbs and plants, they are used to prepare all kinds of dishes, as well as to make decoctions and tinctures. It is during this period of time that their healing properties reach their maximum level. Nettle is considered especially valuable, the medicinal features and benefits of which for men and women have been known since ancient times.

This plant is considered a weed and often grows in shady places, anywhere and in large areas: in suburban areas, along the railroad and highway, etc. Everyone knows the nettle for its stinging. The main 2 species of this plant are considered: dioecious and narrow-leaved. Their healing properties are approximately the same for the body. Visually, they differ from each other only in that the second species has more elongated leaves and slightly less burning hairs than the first.

You can list for a long time how nettle is useful. This plant has simply unique properties, despite the fact that finding it and collecting it yourself is not difficult.

The benefits of nettle

Nettle, with its prevalence and unpretentiousness, is an extremely useful plant for the body of both men and women. It contains a large amount of vitamin A, C and K. It also contains a large amount of fiber, iron, potassium, copper, manganese and others. In addition, nettle contains a lot of:

  • tannins,
  • organic acids
  • flavonoids,
  • phytoncides.

Eating it increases immunity, hemoglobin levels, it improves eyesight and is considered an excellent tool for cleansing the blood of toxins and cholesterol. Nettle has properties that help protect tissues from lack of oxygen, exposure to radiation. It is very useful for men and women working in hazardous industries and mines.

Nettle also contains a large amount of coarse fibers. For this reason, in ancient times this plant was used to make burlap, sails and other things. When eating nettle, the fiber is not digested, which is why cholesterol, all kinds of toxins are excreted from the body, and it also helps prevent constipation. For the same reason, young nettles are used for all kinds of dishes. It is used to prepare the first, but best of all it retains its properties for the body fresh, so it is preferable to use the plant in salads.

Often, nettles can be found in pharmacies in dried form, but its benefits are much less than just plucked. There are practically no vitamins in it, and a decoction prepared from it can only be used for cosmetic purposes or as a rub.

It must be remembered that nettle, as a weed plant, absorbs from the soil all the substances that it contains: both beneficial and harmful. Therefore, when collecting on your own, you need to choose deaf clean places away from roads, landfills and other “dirty” places, because with a dose of vitamins you can get a lot of toxins.

Application in cosmetology

The beneficial properties of nettle also lie in the fact that it is widely used for skin and hair care. And both for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.

Nettle as a decoction of fresh or dried plants can be used for hair care. It is used for rinsing after washing. With continued use, hair becomes thicker, healthier and more manageable. In addition, their loss stops, the bulbs are strengthened and the roots are saturated with vitamins. Nettle decoction is used for men and women as an effective remedy for dandruff and baldness. It is rubbed into the hair roots daily for at least 1 month. After that, a break is made for 10 days, then the course continues. Some even use freshly squeezed juice for greater effect. The benefits of this procedure become noticeable after a few weeks. It is advisable not to store the rinsing decoction in the refrigerator, but to make a new one each time so that it does not lose its healing properties. For some men and women, such a remedy becomes just a salvation in the early stages of baldness.

Nettle decoction is also used to treat skin problems. It is used to heal various wounds, cuts, abrasions and ulcers. Also, a decoction in the form of lotions or rubbing perfectly copes with acne, furunculosis, dermatitis, lichen and other skin diseases.

Given the healing and antiseptic properties of nettle, it is used for facial skin care. A steep decoction is made, which is closed in a dark bottle and placed in the refrigerator. Every morning and evening they wipe the skin of the face and neck. This procedure smoothes wrinkles, improves color and relief. In addition, it helps to get rid of all kinds of skin rashes and irritations. Also, a decoction or juice of fresh nettles is added to water and frozen. These ice cubes are advised to wipe the face, neck and décolleté area several times daily. This procedure tightens the skin, tones it and rejuvenates. Thanks to the healing properties of nettle, this procedure is also suitable for men who have rashes, acne or irritation on their faces.

Contraindications

Vitamin K is involved in the process of blood clotting and, with a sufficient amount, all wounds and injuries heal quickly, however, with an excess of it, blood clots can form and the benefits will be replaced by the opposite effect. Most often, two types of nettle are used for medicinal purposes - stinging and dioecious - both are useful and equally affect the human body.

All of us in childhood got blisters on our hands, accidentally touching the leaves and stems of these plants. Nettle stings everyone...

I remember how a grandmother in the village used to scare us with a nettle twig when we did not obey and were naughty, instead of helping to pluck the young tops of nettles to add to the feed of poultry - ducks, geese, turkeys, especially - chicks. They did not get sick then and grew quickly.

A vivid childhood memory is a green nettle borscht, which my mother cooked from the green leaves of the plant that had just sprouted. It was amazingly delicious! And it turns out that it is very useful, especially in spring, when the body lacks vitamins.

Nettle medicinal properties and contraindications, harm and benefit, folk recipes

You need to know the healing properties and contraindications of nettle in order not to harm your body, but on the contrary, to bring maximum benefit.

Let's start with a fairy tale ... Do you remember the fairy tale "Geese Swans", where the sister wove nettle shirts for her enchanted brothers? Throwing a shirt on her brother, enchanted into a swan, she turned him into a good fellow ... Such a wonderful power is hidden in this unsightly plant!

Nettle and the epic knight Alyosha Popovich

In Rus', there was a custom to weave a shirt from nettles and wear it under chain mail. He was introduced by the wife of the famous hero from Rostov - Alexander, who became the prototype of Alyosha Popovich. His wife Lyubava, gathering him on a campaign, went out at the full moon and collected nettle stalks.

She paid special attention to old nettles. According to folk legends, it is the old nettle that has the strongest healing and magical properties. Nettles must be collected in such a way as not to damage the rhizomes - they must remain in the ground so that the plant does not lose contact with Mother Earth, otherwise its strength will disappear.

The collected nettles were dried for a long time in the shade, then they were ruffled, separating them from the burning leaves, and men's shirts were woven from the remaining stems. Alexander Popovich wore such a shirt under iron chain mail. Today it becomes clear that such a shirt protected the skin from metal oxidation, protected the skin from minor abrasions and wounds, improved blood clotting, and helped in the disinfection and healing of the skin.

Origin of the plant name

According to one version, it is believed that the name nettle comes from the name of the supreme Slavic god of the sun - Ra and the ancient Slavic verb Pi Va, that is, nettle - drinking the sun.

Indeed, the leaves of this plant contain a lot of chlorophyll - just a colossal amount of it. Its leaves really collect the sun. And in those places where there is not enough sun, where there is a lack of heat, nettle makes up for this deficiency through nutrition and ingestion.

There is a belief among the Northern peoples that the gods gave us nettles so that people would not get sick in the gloomy off-season. After all, it appears in early spring, when the body of the inhabitants of the North is greatly weakened by a long and cold spring.

I will share another interesting fact about nettles in heraldry - yes, there is such a coat of arms:

There is a coat of arms of the village, which uses the leaves and stems of nettles - the village is called so - Krapivna, Tula region, and every year nettle festivals are held there with various master classes of products from it. Nettle branches intertwined on the coat of arms.

It's all about the rare acid that is found on the tips of the nettle. In contact with a foreign body, the nettle throws out thousands of small needles that dig into the enemy and splash with their special acid, similar to formic, and histamines are also released, and all together this leads to the formation of a nettle blister and skin irritation.
This acid has a special effect on humans - disinfects blood and saturates it with useful substances.

Collection and storage of nettles. When and where to collect, how to store and dry

When is the best time to harvest nettles? Nettle is most useful in May. It is during this period that it is a natural vitamin concentrate that contains many times more vitamin C than it is in lemon and currant, twice as much vitamin A as in carrots. Here - a complete set of essential minerals - calcium, iron, copper, magnesium. This advice concerns the collection of the ground part of the plant - leaves, stem.

Rhizome must be harvested late in the fall, after the plant has finished fruiting and has accumulated a supply of nutrients in the rhizome in order to have the strength to germinate in the spring.

Where is the best place to collect? Since the nettle is a very unpretentious plant, it grows everywhere, from garbage dumps and old wasteland to the edges of forests and river banks. It is believed that the plant grows in places with negative energy, which it takes away. Therefore, you can spread out a nettle leaf in each corner of the room - you are guaranteed to clear the space. Just remember to throw the leaves outside every other day.

So where to collect? In ecologically clean places, away from cars and roads. Meadows, forest edges and river banks are most suitable. but even in the city you can find a secluded corner in the city park, where this vitamin miracle grows. We do not collect raw materials in landfills and near garbage heaps.

collection time- before lunch, no later than 16.00, and we start collecting when the sun has completely dried the morning dew on the leaves of the plant.

There is a belief not to lift or take anything from nettle thickets, even if a valuable item has fallen there. What has fallen is gone. This expression is about nettles.

How to dry nettles. The plant is dried like any other - in the shade, without direct sunlight, spreading the plucked plants in a thin layer on paper. The room must be well ventilated. To make the drying process faster, it is necessary to mix the raw materials from time to time with your hands. In bunches, some healers do not advise hanging nettles - the stems are thick and may not dry out.

How to store finished raw materials. After the raw material has dried, it is put into jars with lids. It can also be stored in bags, but there is a fairly high probability of moths appearing in it. And in banks there is no threat of dried nettles getting damp and insects will not get there.

    Harm and contraindications

If a person suffers from a high content of hemoglobin in the blood, he has a thickening of the blood and its increased clotting, then nettle in such cases is contraindicated. So they write in all articles about nettles! But…

I'll tell you a little secret:
those who have thick blood, nettle can be used together with sweet clover, which compensates for the effect of nettle on the density of blood - its thinning. It’s just that the beneficial properties of nettle are so high that it’s a sin not to use it if this negative effect can be compensated by a natural anticoagulant!

Also, nettle does not thicken the blood before flowering, it dilutes it during this period. It begins to thicken after flowering.

Nettle should not be used if you are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners), as it will block their action.

Also, infusions, decoctions and nettle dishes are categorically contraindicated for pregnant women precisely because of the high content of vitamin K, since an increase in blood clotting can lead to increased formation of blood clots, which is dangerous, and a miscarriage may occur. It is impossible for pregnant women to raise hemoglobin using any nettle-based mixtures - it tones the uterus and provokes the threat of miscarriage.

It is forbidden to use nettle for people with cardiovascular problems, with thrombophlebitis and varicose veins.

Its use is not desirable for tumors of the uterus and appendages.

The flowering plant nettle (Urtica) is a member of the nettle family. This genus includes more than 50 different species. In the wild, they can be found in temperate regions on both hemispheres. In the middle latitudes, the most common species are stinging nettle (lat. Urtica urens) and stinging nettle (lat. Urtica dioica), which is also called a bug, a strechka or a goad. Plants belonging to these species are very valuable medicinal and food raw materials, and chlorophyll is also extracted from them on an industrial scale, which is widely used in the pharmaceutical and perfume industries.

Such a perennial or annual plant as nettle can be dioecious or monoecious. Integral oppositely located sheet plates have a serrated, serrated or three-five-cut edge. On the surface of leaf plates and shoots there are often a large number of burning bristles. The composition of false spike-shaped inflorescences includes staminate or pistillate flowers. The fruit is a compressed flat-shaped nut covered with perianth.

The structure of the burning hairs of this plant, which is a rather large cell, is similar to a medical ampoule. Inside them is juice, it contains formic acid, choline and histamine. If you touch such a hair, then its upper part breaks and sticks into the surface of the skin. The juice that is under the skin causes a sensation of a sharp burn only in the place that has come into contact with the nettle. As a rule, such burns do not harm human health. However, there are several tropical species of nettle, the burns of which can be fatal to humans. On the territory of Russia, nettle prefers to grow near fences, in vegetable gardens, damp meadows, wastelands, forest clearings, near roads, along the banks of reservoirs, in ditches, and also in ravines. The fact that stinging nettle has healing properties has become known to people for a very long time, in connection with this, such a weed plant is grown both by gardeners and cultivated on an industrial scale.

Nettle cultivation

Nettle can grow quite normally without special care, but if it is planted in specially prepared and fertilized soil, the growth and development of the bush will noticeably improve. Reproduction of such a plant is carried out by seeds and segments of rhizomes. It is not necessary to prepare the seeds before sowing, but if they are stratified for 4 weeks at an air temperature of 0–5 degrees, their germination will increase by 20–30 percent.

Dioecious nettle, which is a perennial, is recommended to be grown in a well-lit area or in partial shade, the soil should be sandy or nutritious and well moistened. The site must be cleared of rhizomatous weeds. Sowing is carried out in early spring or before winter, while the appearance of the first seedlings can occur already at an air temperature of 8 degrees. First, the seeds are mixed with sand, and then they are buried 10–15 mm into the soil, a distance of 0.6 to 0.7 m should be left between the rows. The surface of the plot with crops should be covered with a thin (about 0.5 cm thick) layer of humus or peat, and if sowing was done in early spring, then until the first seedlings appear, it is necessary to ensure that the soil is a little moist all the time. If the sowing was done before winter, then the first seedlings will appear in April, and if in the spring, then in May.

To propagate nettle vegetatively in spring, its rhizome should be removed from the soil, which is cut into pieces, while their length should vary from 8 to 10 centimeters. Then the delenki are planted in a new place to a depth of 8 centimeters, while a distance of about 0.6 m should be observed between the holes. In nettles propagated in this way, the onset of budding is observed 4 weeks earlier compared to those grown from seeds.

Nettle care

The first 2 months the seedlings will be very weak, while their growth and development will be extremely slow. But then the bushes will begin to grow very quickly, and soon become thick and branched. There is absolutely nothing complicated in caring for this plant. He should ensure timely watering, loosening, top dressing and weeding. For irrigation, it is recommended to use water from a spring, a well or rainwater, while it must first be heated in the sun.

Nettle needs a lot of nitrogen, but it is not recommended to use mineral fertilizers for top dressing. It is better to replace them with rotted compost or manure.

Caring for this plant is facilitated by the fact that it is highly resistant to pests and diseases. However, caterpillars of urticaria butterflies can still settle on it, their collection will have to be done manually in June. Collecting them is quite easy, because they settle in clusters, but do not forget about safety measures, as nettles can leave severe burns on your hands.

Nettle collection and storage

As a medicinal raw material, nettles use rhizomes, seeds and leaf plates. Stinging nettle foliage is collected in June-September, when the plants bloom. Some gardeners advise collecting leaves by simply wearing gloves, others mow the grass, and when it is completely withered, they tear off the leaf plates with their bare hands. It is believed that the best time to collect foliage is on Tuesday at dawn in the first quarter of the moon. According to the lunar calendars, such raw materials will have a special healing power.

The collected foliage should be laid out somewhere in a shaded place (in the attic or under a canopy), after spreading the fabric or paper first. It should be noted that the thickness of the layer should not exceed 3-5 centimeters. If they are dried in the sun, then some of the healing properties will be lost, and the leaves themselves will become colorless. To dry them, if desired, you can use the oven, while you should set the temperature to 50 degrees, and leave the door open. In completely dried leaves, the middle veins and petioles will break apart without effort. They will have a slight aroma, a dark green color and a slightly bitter aftertaste. It should be noted that at the output the volume of raw materials will be equal to 1/5 of the original volume. Dried leaves need to be sorted out, while it is necessary to remove all yellow, black and brown leaf blades, as well as rubbish. For storage, they are poured into bags made of cloth or paper, which then must be placed in a well-ventilated, dry, dark place. Raw materials can be stored for no more than two years.

Seeds of stinging and dioecious nettles should be harvested only after they are fully ripe. As a rule, this happens 20 days after the plant has faded, in September. The upper parts of the nettle should be cut off, slightly dried and threshed.

It is recommended to extract the rhizomes of stinging nettle in spring or autumn. All dirt is removed from them, and then they are dried at a temperature of 40 degrees. Choose a dark, dry and ventilated place for storage. Retain their useful qualities of rhizomes for three years. If you are harvesting nettle rhizomes, then keep in mind that 10-15 percent of the bushes will need to be left on the site for renewal, because during the collection of raw materials you have to destroy the entire plant. At the same time, it is necessary to know that it will be possible to re-collect rhizomes in this area only after 3 years.
