On this, in fact, we can draw a line under the question of the game’s level design - in the future, the palette will change very rarely.

So, well, what do we have here? There is a tavern with gloomy whalers, there is a shore with gloomy whalers on it. There are also drunken whalers and the leader of the local mafia, who prevents the main character from getting to the warehouse from which he must begin his investigation. From the very beginning, the game does its best to show how many ways it offers to solve one problem: one of the NPCs with a blue eye practically says this to Pierce - they say, look, the problem can be solved this way, but there are other solutions! Other dialogues are just as clumsy and lifeless.

In fact, at each level the protagonist is locked in a “gut” through which he has to wander until he is completely stupefied, until he understands what they want from him. They usually want little: for him to walk. I walked until I was more than completely fed up with it. I was looking for something, I don’t know what. And, in fact, this process is called “investigation”.

What about the role-playing component? Why upgrade your skills? In order, say, to better find or understand this or that material evidence. If Pierce has found an item relevant to the investigation and understands why it is needed or what happened to it, new questions become available to him in dialogue with other characters. However, all this is not particularly necessary, since it has almost no effect on the progress of the game. And this is the best part of the game.

Abyss without horror

Let's put aside thoughts about how out of place the clumsily sculpted character models with bulging eyes and scraps of rags instead of hair are in 2018. Let's forget that if a beam falls on the stairs in an abandoned estate, it is impossible to climb over it or crawl under it (although this, of course, is an outrage from the point of view of level design).

After a couple of hours, it seems that the creators of the game decided to change the concept on the fly: away with the monotony, otherwise the player will get bored. And now it will not be a game about investigation, but something similar to Outlast! When all sorts of nasty things come at you from the darkness. What a great idea we came up with, huh?

This, by the way, is where Pierce’s descent into madness begins: the policeman who accompanied him from the very beginning has just been torn into a British flag by cultists, and suddenly here he is, standing by the bed of a detective in a psychiatric hospital, shaking his head and saying that he’s completely out of his mind. moved out.

Apparently, the main character really does have it, because suddenly everything disappears, and one of Lovecraft’s monsters starts chasing him around the hospital (which, by the way, is not explained to the player in any way). He runs around completely randomly, and you can’t come up with any strategy to get away from him - except maybe hide in the closet. But even there he may well find Pierce.

However, quite a variety. For most of the game, the detective will slowly go crazy (which is influenced by his contact with the world of the unknown, drinking, reading occult books and artifacts scattered here and there) and walking. A lot of walking. Walk forward, right, left and sometimes backward. Yes, there will be a level with stealth, and on one they will even let you shoot, but it looks so pathetic that I want to ask the creators of the game: why bother? Wouldn't it have been better to just leave it out of the game? But in general, you need to go. Yes. Walk, it's good for your health.

As the story progresses, seemingly promising characters will appear in Pierce's field of view, but disappear without a trace, as if they never existed, and their story arcs will hang in the air. The detective will gather a team of like-minded people to solve one problem, which will scatter in about 20 minutes. Is it possible to avoid madness - after all, the game even has a special screen on which you can monitor its development? No! It is forbidden! Pierce will still go crazy one way or another. Different ways to solve one problem will sometimes be presented to him, but they will all lead to the same result. The player's actions have no real consequences.

As a result, the player is asked to choose one of four endings (depending on the level of a particular skill, there may be fewer of them), which, again, are not affected in any way by the choice made earlier. And I don’t want to think about which one to choose, since everything that’s happening around looks terribly crooked and unnatural, and the characters don’t evoke any empathy. Whether it’s will or whether it’s captivity, it’s all the same. Yes, yes, you came up with a very cool idea - not to show whether everything happened in reality or whether it was just the product of Pierce’s sick brain. Take the pie from the shelf.

Call of Ctulhu truly lives up to its roots. Just like Lovecraft's story, it is boring, drawn-out and incapable of generating a single emotion - neither positive nor negative. However, in those places where, apparently, you should be scared, sometimes you start laughing until you cry: well, we can’t release something like that now!
